Charlotte, North Carolina’s Duragfest.

“The Met Gala of Durags”

This weekend, purveyors of culture in Charlotte, North Carolina held the first annual Duragfest. Family, Friends, and Wave Gods, came out to showcase their love for the Durag and it’s importance in fashion and black hair culture.

The event was styled as the Met Gala Of Durags. Photos of the event made a lot of noise on social media because it seemed like a movie, something straight out of a fashion magazine.

Duragfest is an alternative Juneteenth celebration, focusing on the creative freedom of African American culture. Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas.

The event was held at BLK MRKT Art Gallery, a creative arts foundation founded by Dammit Wesley and SimplisticPhobia.

Live performances were held by rappers Dre Murro, Zen So Fly, DJ Fannie Mae, Milan Hightower, & JxHines.

Clothing brand PISH POSH had a pop up shop showcasing their latest products on live models presented by The Ghood Kind.

Every PISH POSH apparel piece is hand painted by Artist and Fashion Influencer Emani aka. @thepishposhgirl. Emani’s work has been recognized by several influential publications and is regularly seen on Instagram’s Popular Page for her work.

There’s was plenty of food, games, and activities for everyone of all ages. There was even a wave competition to show who had the best waves! — (Don’t show up to a Durag Festival without nice waves!)

Next Years Durag Festival in Charlotte is sure to be jam packed from Durag lovers across the nation. Who knows, maybe they’ll take the Festival on tour.

Where would you like to see the next Durag Festival?

T-Shirts still available here.
