This weekend, purveyors of culture in Charlotte, North Carolina held the first annual Duragfest. Family, Friends, and Wave Gods, came out to showcase their love for the Durag and it’s importance in fashion and black hair culture.

The event was styled as the Met Gala Of Durags. Photos of the event made a lot of noise on social media because it seemed like a movie, something straight out of a fashion magazine.

Duragfest is an alternative Juneteenth celebration, focusing on the creative freedom of African American culture. Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas.

The event was held at BLK MRKT Art Gallery, a creative arts foundation founded by Dammit Wesley and SimplisticPhobia.
