South African pioneering musician HHP (Hip Hop *Pantsula) privately known as Jabulani Tsambo passed away Wednesday afternoon at the age of 38 from unknown causes.

*Pantsula is a tradition and dance form that originated in the black townships of South Africa during the apartheid era. It developed into a form of social commentary for South Africans and has undergone several transformations with the country’s changing political tides.

HHP is one of the pioneering artists of the successful South African Hip Hop sub-genre, Motswako. Motswako is a sub-genre of hip-hop from Mafikeng in South Africa’s North West province. The sub-genre is one of the most successful hip-hop movements in the country.

HHP successfully mixed Hip Hop and Kwaito at a time when many artists were imitating American style of rap and was one of the first South African rappers to achieve mainstream success. He paved the way for many Motswako rappers such as Cassper Nyovest.

HHP collaborated with the likes of Nas, Talib Kweli, ProVerb, Solo, & many more.

“He will deservedly go down as one of the most influential and impactful South African hip hop artists of his generation,” the minister said, adding that he was saddened by his sudden and tragic passing.” South African Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa

Jabulani Tsambo provides inspiration to many South African artists. For many, he provided a voice of inspiration that you could do anything you set your mind to doing regardless of your circumstances.

Rest In Motswako, Jabba.
