Travis Scott’s new album, Astroworld, is themed around the defunct theme park, Six Flags Astroworld. The theme park closed about a decade ago.
The Astroworld album is a rollercoaster ride full of musical anticipation and excitement. The album’s apparel follows the theme park theme, serving as a reminder to fans of their experience.
Unlike most albums though, Travis Scott brought his album to life with the Astroworld Festival, a replication of the original Six Flags Astroworld theme park for his Houston Tour stop at NRG Stadium.
In a 2017 interview with GQ, Travis Scott stated “They tore down AstroWorld to build more apartment space. That’s what it’s going to sound like, like taking an amusement park away from kids. We want it back. We want the building back. That’s why I’m doing it. It took the fun out of the city.”
Being a man of his word, Travis Scott’s inaugural Astroworld Festival took place this Saturday. Travis released the official lineup on Friday.
Fans had been anticipating this day since Travis Scott released his Astroworld Tour schedule. 40,000 fans came out to enjoy the festivities.
Concertgoer Joey Guerra from Chron states, “The expanse layout included a carousel, Ferris wheel, mega drop and various carnival rides that required you to purchase tickets. Dozens of food trucks lined the perimeter. Merch stands boasted an impressive array of shirts and hoodies that played on the Astroworld theme. There was even a Screwed Up Records and Tapes pop-up shop.”
Another fun fact is that some of the signage used for the Festival is the actual signage used at the original Astroworld Park. It turns out the signage has been sitting in storage for over a decade.
Astroworld is a social and financial gain for the city of Houston with the city’s Urban Music Festivals in decline.
